Editorial Three

I noticed I was having issues with blur and my solution to it was bump up the lighting and use something to balance on, turns out I forgot about ISO.  The ISO on my camera was WAY too low and I was having such a hard time photographing good photographs.  I can’t wait to try photographing with a better adjusted ISO!

I guess now I know why all the darker photographs were blurry.  When shooting for the portrait assignment, my model asked if my camera was broken.  It turns out that the ISO was too low for the lighting I was in.  I still haven’t figured out what the best ISO is for certain types of lighting, but if a lower ISO works best in the brightest light, the best way to find out is to bring it down gradually until you find the right one.

Assignment 1B

Ring-a-Round Test

1. Does your “correct” photo still look like the best color balance?
After looking at all the different “colored” versions of the original photograph I think that original photograph is not necessarily the best color balance.

2. If not, what new color balance would work better?
I noticed that the Cyan 5 version looks like it might be the best color balance.

3. What has this comparative test revealed about the nature of color balance?
This comparative test allowed me to see that while something may appear to be the best color balance, when you are given the option and ability to see different color balances the best color balance may not be the best color balance after all.  After looking at the different colored images, I began to see that perhaps the original image did not have the best color balance; however, before the comparative test I don’t think I would have seen any other color balance to be the best color balance for this photograph.

Editorial Two

I realized how difficult it is to stand still.  I figured I would be able to take good pictures without a tripod, but that isn’t really true.  Most of the pictures I took without something to balance on came out blurry.  I guess my body moves more than I expected it to.  Leaning on table or against walls reduced the blur, and made the pictures look way better.

This is an example of what the images looked like before I decided to lean on different objects.  Even though I though I was standing very still, you can see the effects of slight moment in the blurring of the image.  After using the table to lean on, the images I captured became more crisp and essentially looked better.

When the image is in focus, the photograph looks better.  It seems as though there are different factors that can keep an image in focus.  I had to actually stand over the image, and place the camera on the edge of a chair to make sure the photograph was in focus.

Assignment 1A

1.  Why would we use a white object?

We are challenging exposure skills so we can become more sensitive to exposure and figure out what exposure works best in certain situations.  Information is often lost in the highlights and we don’t want to lose any information, so by taking pictures of white on white we can practice maintaining the information that is usually lost in the highlights.  We also chose white because it is very easy to see color casts.

2.  Which EV works better for:

White on white?
Based on the pictures I captured, I would say that the best EV for white on white objects is +0.3 or +0.7

White on black?
I found that the best pictures had an EV of -0.3 when both white and black objects were in the frame.

Black on black?
I noticed that the lower the EV the more “black” the objects looked.  I tried using -1.0, -1.3 and -1.7 but found that -.20 worked best when trying to capture the black background as black.

3. How have your classmates  interpreted this assignment in comparison to yours?
I’ve noticed that while I piled several objects onto each other, most students simply chose one object to photograph.  When photographing I tried to make sure my objects interlocked.  I didn’t want it to be just one object with either a black or white background.  I wanted the different levels of white or black to be seen against each other.

Is this picture too blue?
I can never tell what coloring looks best-blue or yellow?  I played around with the hues and decided this was what I liked best, yet I can’t help but wonder if middle grey has any effect?

I never realized the effect of middle grey until now.  It’s almost as if most of my pictures were effected by the middle grey.  Learning about how to get around it, has really helped me notice the different colors present in photographs.  Now, I can’t help but wonder if my images are either too blue or too yellow?

I guess now I just have to work on finding the right color balance.  Middle grey will no longer be an issue in my photographs, I just hope my images are the right color balance.  But it seems as though that might be hard to see.
